Protecting Our Patterns: Why IP Matters at Udiri

Protecting Our Patterns: Why IP Matters at Udiri

Every Pattern Tells a Story

At Udiri, every line, curve, and seed-shaped form in our designs tells a story. From the resilient rhythms of the Ridi pattern (inspired by sesame seeds once harvested by displaced women) to the bold geometry of Rogo and the rooted power of Aya, our surface patterns aren’t just decorative — they’re deeply personal, culturally grounded, and ethically co-created.

That’s why protecting them through intellectual property (IP) isn’t just a legal step — it’s a continuation of the care we put into every piece.

What Does IP Mean for Udiri?

IP (Intellectual Property) gives us the right to safeguard the original patterns and stories we create. It means:

  • No one else can reproduce or sell our designs without permission
  • We can license our patterns for meaningful collaborations (like Otto Studio)
  • We stand in solidarity with the communities whose stories inspire the work

How We Protect Our Designs

  • Copyright & Documentation: Every pattern is timestamped, archived, and story-backed.
  • Legal Registration: We're currently exploring protection in Nigeria, the EU, and the U.S.
  • Clear Licensing Terms: Collaborations happen through respectful, co-creative licensing.

Why It Matters to You

When you carry a Udiri bag or wear our jewelry, you’re holding something original — a design with protected roots. You're part of a story that values integrity as much as beauty.

Looking Ahead

We’ll continue working with artisans like Mohamed (our Tuareg stamping expert) and refugee women to not only craft but also protect the integrity of what we create.
