AJÁ OJII (Black Sand) is a meditation on accumulation, repetition and transformation.
Composed of thousands of hand-rolled paper beads from the Udiri Studio Archive, the work draws its title from the Igbo words ajá (sand) and ojii (black). Like grains gathered over time to form a landscape, individual elements accumulate into a dense and seemingly continuous surface.
Viewed from a distance, the work appears as a singular black field. As the viewer moves closer, that surface begins to dissolve into countless individual forms, each carrying the marks of its making. What first appears uniform gradually reveals itself as a terrain shaped through repetition, patience and attention.
Using paper—a material often associated with impermanence—the work explores how value, memory and presence can emerge through accumulation. Small gestures become a larger whole. Individual forms become a landscape.
Part of Udiri's ongoing exploration of material transformation, AJÁ OJII invites a slower way of looking, where meaning is discovered through proximity.
